Free ISTQB Foundation (CTFL v4.0) Mock Exam with Answers

20 multiple-choice questions (one correct answer each) covering the 6 chapters of the ISTQB CTFL v4.0 syllabus, with an explained answer for every question. These are original questions written by AutomationDataCamp: they are not official ISTQB questions, but they follow the exam format.

What does the real ISTQB Foundation exam look like?

The CTFL v4.0 exam has 40 multiple-choice questions in 60 minutes (25% extra time if you take the exam in a language that is not your native language). You need 26 correct answers out of 40, i.e. 65%, to pass. There are no prerequisites and the certificate does not expire. Full details, the price and our preparation: ISTQB Foundation (CTFL) certification.

Chapter 1. Fundamentals of Testing Question 1. Which of these statements is one of the seven testing principles?
Show the answer

Answer B. Testing every combination of inputs and conditions is impossible, except in trivial cases: effort is prioritised using risk and test techniques. Testing shows the presence of defects, never their absence.

Chapter 1. Fundamentals of Testing Question 2. A developer makes an error when writing a condition, so the delivered code contains an incorrect statement. What is this incorrect statement called?
Show the answer

Answer B. The error is the human action, the defect (bug) is what it leaves in the code or in a document, and the failure is the incorrect behaviour that can occur when the defect is executed.

Chapter 1. Fundamentals of Testing Question 3. Which testing principle describes the fact that a small number of modules contain most of the defects?
Show the answer

Answer B. Defect clustering (often described by the Pareto principle): a few components contain most of the defects, which guides where test effort goes.

Chapter 1. Fundamentals of Testing Question 4. What is the main advantage of a tester who is independent of the development team?
Show the answer

Answer C. Independence brings a different perspective and different assumptions. It also has drawbacks (isolation, developers losing their sense of responsibility): it complements the developers' testing and does not replace it.

Chapter 2. Testing Throughout the Software Development Lifecycle Question 5. What does the “shift-left” approach mean?
Show the answer

Answer B. Shift-left: requirements reviews, tests written before the code, static analysis, component tests in continuous integration. The earlier a defect is found, the less it costs to fix.

Chapter 2. Testing Throughout the Software Development Lifecycle Question 6. After a defect has been fixed, the test case that had failed is run again. What type of testing is this?
Show the answer

Answer B. Confirmation testing checks that the defect has been fixed. Regression testing checks that the fix has not broken anything elsewhere.

Chapter 2. Testing Throughout the Software Development Lifecycle Question 7. In ATDD (Acceptance Test-Driven Development), when are the acceptance tests written?
Show the answer

Answer C. In ATDD, the acceptance criteria of a user story are turned into tests before the code is written, through joint work between the business, development and testing.

Chapter 2. Testing Throughout the Software Development Lifecycle Question 8. Which test level focuses on the system's ability to meet the needs of users and the business?
Show the answer

Answer D. Acceptance testing (user, operational, contractual and regulatory, alpha and beta) checks that the system is ready to be used. System testing checks the end-to-end behaviour of the system.

Chapter 3. Static Testing Question 9. Which of these activities is static testing?
Show the answer

Answer B. Static testing examines a work product without executing it: reviews (of requirements, of code) and static analysis. It can detect defects at the requirements stage, before they ever enter the code.

Chapter 3. Static Testing Question 10. In a formal review, which role leads the review meeting?
Show the answer

Answer B. The moderator, or facilitator, ensures that the review meeting runs smoothly. The scribe records the anomalies, the author fixes the work product under review, and the manager decides and provides the resources.

Chapter 4. Test Analysis and Design Question 11. A field accepts an age from 18 to 65 inclusive (whole numbers). What is the minimum number of equivalence partitions needed to cover the valid and invalid values?
Show the answer

Answer C. Three partitions: under 18 (invalid), from 18 to 65 (valid), over 65 (invalid). One value per partition is enough for equivalence partitioning coverage.

Chapter 4. Test Analysis and Design Question 12. Same field (18 to 65 inclusive). Using 2-value boundary value analysis, which values must be tested?
Show the answer

Answer B. With 2 values, you test each boundary and its neighbour in the adjacent partition: 17 and 18, 65 and 66. The 3-value variant tests each boundary and its two neighbours: 16, 17, 18, 19 and 64, 65, 66, 67.

Chapter 4. Test Analysis and Design Question 13. A business rule depends on 3 conditions, each of which is true or false. How many columns (rules) does the full decision table have?
Show the answer

Answer C. With n Boolean conditions, the full table has 2 to the power of n rules: 2 × 2 × 2 = 8. It can then be reduced by merging equivalent rules.

Chapter 4. Test Analysis and Design Question 14. A cash machine (ATM) behaves differently depending on whether it is waiting for a card, a PIN or an amount. Which technique is the most suitable?
Show the answer

Answer B. When behaviour depends on the current state and the events received, you model a state diagram and cover its states and transitions.

Chapter 4. Test Analysis and Design Question 15. Which statement about white-box coverage is correct?
Show the answer

Answer B. Covering all the branches (conditional and unconditional) of the control flow graph necessarily executes all the statements. The reverse is false: an if without an else can be fully executed without its “false” branch being tested.

Chapter 4. Test Analysis and Design Question 16. Which of these techniques is an experience-based technique?
Show the answer

Answer B. The v4.0 syllabus classifies error guessing, exploratory testing and checklist-based testing as experience-based techniques.

Chapter 5. Managing the Test Activities Question 17. Among these risks, which one is a project risk (and not a product risk)?
Show the answer

Answer C. A product risk concerns the quality of the software (functionality, performance, security). A project risk concerns how the project is run: schedules, resources, suppliers, organisation.

Chapter 5. Managing the Test Activities Question 18. How is the level of a risk determined in risk-based testing?
Show the answer

Answer B. Risk level = likelihood combined with impact. It is used to prioritise testing and to decide how thorough it should be.

Chapter 5. Managing the Test Activities Question 19. In the test pyramid, which type of test should be the most numerous?
Show the answer

Answer C. The base of the pyramid contains numerous, fast, isolated component tests; the top contains fewer end-to-end tests, which are slower and more fragile.

Chapter 6. Test Tools Question 20. What is an expected benefit of test automation?
Show the answer

Answer B. Automation saves time on repeated tests and gives fast feedback. The syllabus also lists its risks: unrealistic expectations, underestimated maintenance effort, excessive confidence in the tool, and dependence on the tool vendor.
